It can often be difficult for small businesses to sound human in their marketing and social media efforts – especially when presenting technical or complicated information. Many businesses try to sound professional, but come off sounding more robotic and cold. No matter what your business, it’s ok to have a little fun with your marketing and social media. After all, the more human your business sounds, the more likely it is to attract customers and fans.

Your customers want to make connections with your business, and the best way to get them to connect is to follow these three tips for creating a human brand voice:

1. Make your business’s tone personal, approachable and engaging.

Telling people your business is an industry leader is great for attracting customers and building your business’s credibility – but it won’t mean a thing if you don’t present your business in a fun, engaging tone. By having a little fun with your marketing and social media, you can make even the most boring and technical of businesses one that connects and engages with customers.

2. Speak the language your audience speaks.

Lose all corporate jargon, sales talk and overly fluffy language on social media. Instead, you should talk to your customers like a normal person and don’t try to hard sell them your products. You can still present complicated or educational materials, and sell your products, in a way that doesn’t alienate, or talk down to, your customer base. The more approachable you are, the better the results will be for your business.

3. Be available.

You should always be available when it comes to your business’s online persona – especially on social media. When using social media, you be available to respond to any and all comments, questions and reviews from fans. If you schedule your posts, but ignore the customer engagement you get on the posts, then you will quickly lose fans and customers. Creating a viable, engaging online community is one of the best ways to show that your business has a human side – and best of all, it’s free.
